Yes. Buccal massage is one of the most effective non-invasive options for TMJ tension, specifically because it accesses the muscles responsible from inside the mouth, where no external technique can reach. The results depend almost entirely on who performs it and how.
As the founder of FACECO with a background in dermatology, I want to give you an honest answer, including what our clients consistently experience and why some people have had disappointing results elsewhere.
Why TMJ tension is a muscle problem first
TMJ discomfort affects millions of people. The most common cause is not the joint itself but the muscles around it.
The real issue with TMJ tension is not the joint. It is the muscles. And the most important of those muscles can only be reached from inside the mouth.
This is why so many people dealing with TMJ feel stuck. Night guards, anti-inflammatories, and external massage can help, but they only treat the surface. The muscles underneath stay tight.
Working from both inside and outside the mouth at the same time, we can reach layers of jaw tension that no external technique gets to. For many clients, this is the first time these muscles have ever been properly reached.

What our clients experience
Here is what our clients experience after buccal massage sessions focused on TMJ tension:
- Immediate reduction in jaw tightness and the locked feeling
- Improved ability to open the mouth fully, often in the same session
- Reduction in morning headaches and ear fullness from overnight clenching
- Decreased masseter tenderness within 24 to 48 hours
- Cumulative improvement in comfort across a course of 4 to 6 sessions

Why some people have bad experiences, and how FACECO is different
Some people report flare-ups after buccal massage. In almost every case the cause is one of the following: technique applied too aggressively on already tender muscles, insufficient preparation beforehand, or no distinction made between a cosmetic buccal massage and focused intraoral work for jaw tension.
At FACECO, every session begins with a short consultation. We look at which muscles are most involved, how tender they are, and what level of pressure is appropriate. For clients with significant tension, we begin gently and build gradually across sessions as the muscles respond.

How often should you get buccal massage for TMJ?
- Sessions 1 and 2: initial release and assessment. Most clients feel a meaningful difference after session 2.
- Sessions 3 and 4: deeper work and trigger point release. Typically where the biggest shift happens: reduced morning tension, less daytime clenching, improved jaw range of motion.
- Monthly maintenance: once the acute tension has been addressed, monthly sessions help keep things from building back up. Works best combined with daily awareness of clenching habits.
Sessions are spaced 2 to 3 weeks apart to give the muscles time to settle between visits.
