Waking up with a sore, tight jaw is one of the most common things clients mention when they first come to FACECO. The jaw feels locked. Opening the mouth fully is uncomfortable. Most people have been managing it for months, sometimes years, often with a night guard from their dentist.
A night guard does its job well. It protects the teeth from grinding damage. But it is not designed to release the muscle tension that has built up over time. That is a different task, and it is where buccal massage comes in.
Why the jaw is sore in the morning
Morning jaw soreness is almost always a muscle problem. During sleep, most people who experience it are clenching or grinding without realising it. The masseter muscle and the deeper jaw muscles work through the night under sustained pressure. By the time you wake up, they are fatigued and tight in the same way any overworked muscle would be.
Why jaw massage alone is not enough
Massaging the outside of the jaw helps. It eases the masseter, improves circulation, and gives some immediate relief. Most people who deal with morning jaw pain have tried this and found it useful but not enough.
The reason is anatomy. The muscles most responsible for deep jaw tension sit behind the back teeth and are completely inaccessible from outside the face. No amount of external massage, however skilled, can reach them. They can only be released from inside the mouth.
This is the gap that buccal massage fills.
How buccal massage helps with morning jaw pain
Buccal massage works on the jaw muscles from both the outside and inside the mouth at the same time. The external work addresses the masseter and surrounding tissue. The intraoral work, performed with sterile gloves, reaches the deeper muscles that hold the tension that regular massage cannot touch.
For clients dealing with morning jaw pain, this combination tends to produce a level of release they have not experienced from anything else. The jaw feels different after a session, not just looser on the surface but genuinely lighter and less braced.

What our clients experience
The pattern we hear most often from clients who come in with morning jaw soreness:
- The jaw feels noticeably less tight the morning after a session
- The locked, restricted feeling when opening the mouth wide starts to ease
- The masseter, which often feels like a hard knot along the jawline, softens over the course of sessions
How many sessions does it take to feel the difference from buccal massage?
For morning jaw pain specifically, most clients notice a meaningful difference after the second or third session. The first session begins releasing what is there. Subsequent sessions go deeper as the surface tension softens and the underlying layers become more accessible.
Sessions 1 and 2: initial release. Most clients feel a difference the morning after session 2.
Sessions 3 and 4: deeper work. Morning soreness reduces significantly for most clients at this stage.
Monthly maintenance: keeps the tension from rebuilding, especially important for clients who continue to clench habitually.
One habit that makes every session work better
Between sessions, the single most useful thing is learning to notice and release jaw clenching during the day. Most people who clench at night also clench during the day without realising it. Catching it during waking hours and releasing reduces the baseline tension going into each night.
The resting jaw position: lips together, teeth slightly apart, tongue resting gently on the roof of the mouth. It sounds simple but most chronic jaw clenchers have never been told this.

Important: when massage is not the right first step
Buccal massage works on the muscles and soft tissue around the jaw, not the joint itself. If you are experiencing severe jaw pain, an inability to open or close your mouth fully, a jaw that locks or feels like it has shifted position, or sharp pain inside the joint rather than muscle soreness, please see a dentist or healthcare provider before booking any massage treatment. These symptoms can indicate a joint issue that needs professional evaluation first. Massage is most effective when the joint itself is healthy and the issue is muscular tension, which is the most common cause of morning jaw soreness and TMJ discomfort.
