Introduction

Dear cherished friends,

As the founder of FACECO in sunny California—and a dedicated dermatologist with over 15 years of experience—I’m excited to share important insights about everyday skincare choices that directly impact your skin’s health and long-term beauty.

Dimethicone: Smooth Finish, Hidden Concerns

One ingredient I frequently discuss with clients is Dimethicone.

This silicone-based ingredient is commonly found in foundation creams, where it creates a smooth texture and matte finish. However, its use in moisturizers raises concerns. By forming a barrier on the skin, Dimethicone may interfere with natural skin processes such as respiration and sebum production. Over time, this can contribute to clogged pores and other skin issues.

Harsh Surfactants in Cleansers: What to Watch For

Another critical area to consider is the type of surfactants used in cleansing products.

While surfactants are essential for removing dirt and oil, not all are gentle or skin-friendly. Harsh surfactants—similar to those used in dishwashing detergents—can damage the skin barrier, leading to inflammation, irritation, and accelerated aging.

Unfortunately, many commercial facial cleansers still contain these aggressive ingredients, including:

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
  • Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES)
  • Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate
  • Alkylbenzene Sulfonate
  • Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
